Android application for lucid dreams

Lucid dreamcatcher has released an application for lucid dreaming. Available for android phones, the application can be installed through android market or by using the QR code below.

New ! The paid version contains a dream diary.
Minimum OS required: Froyo 2.2

Note: The flash dreamer does not work on all phones, it is mainly a manufacturer issue.

Application android for lucid dreamsThis application proposes three lucid dream induction techniques.

Please note, however, that the application alone will not be enough to induce lucid dreams. To induce lucid dreams, personal training is necessary and in particular you will need to improve your dream recall (eg keep a dream diary as often as you can), and make the quality of your sleep a priority, have long restful nights.

Wake Back To Bed

Wake Back To BedThe Wake Back to Bed induction method is described in this article: WBTB induction method.

With the application you can program an alarm. The alarm will ring twice. The first time the alarm signal the beginning of the Wake Back To Bed at the programmed time. The second time it will signaled the end of the Wake Back To Bed at the programmed time + interruption length.

Four alarm sounds are available. The alarm must not be stopped manually. It stops itself. So, if you are a heavy sleeper, choose one of the longest alarm (e.g. ocean or forest).

Alarms (from freesound):

  • Zen: the sound of a bell ringing => 20 seconds
  • Tibetan: a monk singing => 22 seconds
  • Forest: the sound of the forest in the morning with birds singing => 50 seconds
  • Ocean: The rhythmic sound of the waves => 1 minute 30 seconds

Motion detectorsThe purpose of the motion dectors is to trigger the alarm at the best estimated time within 30 minutes before the chosen waking time. This fonction uses the phone sensors. You will need to put the phone on the mattress, next to you, for instance below the mattress cover to prevent it from falling. When you move the movement will be propagated through the mattress to the phone. If the detector does not seem to work, you may need to lower its sensibility level.

Dream Exit Initiated Lucid Dream

DEILDThe Dream Exit Initiated Lucid Dream is a WILD method (Wake Initiated Lucid Dream). This method allows to enter fully lucid into the dream state. So you exit from a dream, wake up, and immediately re-enter another dream, but fully conscious this time.

For this method to work, you need to wake up during the night, and do not move which will fool your body into believing that you may still be asleep. Your body will then trigger the next sleep cycle.

The first important part of the method is to wake up without moving. You can program yourself with auto-suggestion to do so. Or you can use an alarm. Many alarms have the same issue, they do not stop by themselves, you need to move to stop them. The application proposes short alarms that will stop themselves. You can program several alarms repeating themselves (e.g. every 30 minutes), which will give you several opportunities to test the method.

Once you are awake, the tricky and very important part is to let the sleep take you but remain lucid. For that, you can concentrate your mind eye on a visualisation. For instance, imagine that your are still in the dream you just wake up from. If everything goes according to plan, after a while you will suddenly realize that you are no longer imagining it, you ARE in the dream again.

Flash Dreamer

Flash dreamerThe flash dreamer is freely inspired from the famous novadreamer.

Even when you are asleep, your senses perceive the external world: sounds, lights, odors… Sometimes elements are included in your dream. For instance a blinking light will become a stormy sky.

Program yourself (e.g. autosuggestion) to do a reality check each time you see a light related event.

During the night, put the phone close enough so you will be able to perceive the flashing light even with closed eyes.

This method uses the camera flash and therefore may reduce its lifespan.

The flashs frequency is low (1 or 2 flashs per seconds) but if you are epileptic make sure before using it that this is safe for you.

  1. Hello,

Im not able to download the program from anywhere… The Market says it can’t find the application… Is there something wrong?

    By Luis | December 22, 2010, 1:45 pm
  2. There are some filters in the market, allowing phones to see only apps that can work on them. One of the main filter is the OS version. This app is set to work only for phones with froyo 2.2 or higher. If your OS version is lower, this is probably why you cannot find the app.

  3. Oh that must be it! Mine is 2.1 still =) Thanks!

  4. Thanks a lot for this app!!
Could you add an option to make it flash through screen instead of led? Even choossing colors, etc?
And just an idea, why not creating some kind of adaptors for the eyes (made of cloth) for android phones which will convert them into ultra cheap novadreamers thanks to your great app?
    Just sharing my ideas.
    Thanks again!!
BTW: Which would be the good timing for the flash dreamer induction??

  5. Great idea for the flashing screen, I am not sure if it is possible but I can check for a later version.
For the novadreamer app, it is also an excellent Idea, but I do not have the necessary competences to build an adaptor. But why not, if I find someone with the competences or take the time to learn them, maybe.

For the flash dreamer induction, the best is to do it in the last hour of your sleep, with for instance an induction every 10 minutes.

  6. Glad you liked the ideas, thx again for the app :)

  7. And I think I expressed myself badly, about the adaptor, what I meant is, If you advertise via your app some kind of elastic wand to be able to use the phone just like a pair of glasses, you would be turning every android phone in the world into a really cheap Novadreamers just for lets say 10-20 bucks that would cost the “adaptor”. I myself would be happy to buy it,and you would be the only client since everyone would be able to order it via your great app.
If your app happens to be popular, that would be a way to make some money. Even, to be safer for you to make the initial investment, you could even do a poll in your app to check out how many users would buy it,that way u can calculate if it will be rentable.
Just sharing my ideas with someone who shared his software :)

  8. One last thing:
I took the liberty to tell some guys in this forum about your app, hope you dont mind!

Hope It accelerates more ppl using your app :)

  9. Thanks for the forum :-)

True, I did not fully understand your adaptor idea. Now, I get it, but smartphones came in so many shapes, and it’s a bit heavy too, it would be quite complicated to do something confortable, also, I think, on the long term, there my be health risk in keeping the phone too close of the brain for a long period of time.

    By dreamcatcher | January 3, 2011, 12:27 pm
  10. I think this will be funny for you,but I made something to place the phone (since I agree on the healthy thing with u).
    Here is what I made:

    img148.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=img20110104170008.jpg

I had to do it coz i used your app 2 days in a row now and I keep moving the phone so I dont c the flashes, now I wont be able to move the phone :)

  11. Woao, great idea, please let me know if it helps.

    By dreamcatcher | January 4, 2011, 11:23 pm
  12. It helped…. to my girlfriend… =(
(She saw the flashes during the night, but I didnt). Anyway its only the first night I try,I wasnt able to see it, but Im starting with lucid dreaming and by now I think it might be normal. Had another crazy idea, is to take a snapshot when the flash is flashing (as an option) so that you can see if the flash was pointing at you or not (and you can see how u move through the night, if you are pointing the flash into the correct direction suposing people put their phones in some special place in the bed, etc).

I hope Im not anyoing you with my coments, I just am really happy about your app.

    By Anthony | January 5, 2011, 11:27 pm
  13. Quite the contrary, if I did this app it is to share with others and have opinions and feedbacks to improve it.
Well, anyway, this method is not the most efficient to have lucid dreams, even with a real nova dreamer. It requires an intense training through autosuggestion to recognize the flashes. Wake Back To Bed usually works for me and DEILD seems also quite efficient.

Taking the pictures would be fun, if only to see our faces while we sleep ;-) But for the moment, I do not have the time to work on a new version, and I am not sure it would be useful to many users, because it requires a complex system to install the phone above the sleeper.

  14. Hehe ok I understand ^^

    By Anthony | January 6, 2011, 12:07 am
  15. Wouldn’t it be easier to mount a small mirror above the phone and angle it so the flash would bounce off the mirror onto your face?

    By Dave | January 8, 2011, 6:48 am
  16. Yeah, thats a better solution if you dont need the phone to be hold still (I use it to listen to music before to sleep, so I need it by my side in the bed, if Its on the “night table” I will end up moving it, this way, phone doesnt move in the whole night ^^

  17. Hi, seems to be a great app. Wanted to try it on my Galaxy S but cannot find it in the market. I have Android 2.2 (Froyo) installed and cannot explain why i cannot find it. Do you have an idea or is their an alternative location for download?

    By Walter | January 15, 2011, 11:49 pm
  18. I don’t know why, I sent your question to the android market support team, if they answer it, I’ll put their answer here :-)
The application is also here http://www.attrape-songes.com/reves-lucides/?download=Dreamcatcher.apk as an android package. To install it directly you can put it on your SD card and click on it through some kind of files manager app. There is probably some kind of preference you will need to turn off to allow direct install, an alert message will warn you if you need to do it.

    By dreamcatcher | January 16, 2011, 2:47 am
  19. Thanks für your efforts. In the meantime I am going to install it from the alternate location you provided and check later for the market download.

    By Walter | January 16, 2011, 10:21 am
  20. I just installed the app by using the provided download. I got a new application entry in the menu with the name “Attrape-songes” and when I start it the Dreamcatcher app is launched. However the UI language is French. Is there a way to change it to English as depicted in your screenshots? I cannot find an options menu to switch the language.

    By Walter | January 16, 2011, 10:40 am
  21. French is the default language but there is english too. Anyway apparently through this kind of install, the language is not properly and automatically set up by android.
So I just did a version containing only english:

    By dreamcatcher | January 16, 2011, 1:06 pm
  22. Just installed the English version. Works without any problems and the entry in the application menu now reads “Lucid Dreamcatcher”. Thanks a lot for the special service of creating additional apk files!!

Regarding the screen flashing idea of Anthony, I would be interested, too. I think it should be doable because the flashlight app also activates all leds and increases their light value to maximum. Nevertheless, this app is already great in its current form

    By Walter | January 16, 2011, 2:19 pm
  23. Great news :-)
I’ll try to do the screen flashing for a next version.

    By dreamcatcher | January 16, 2011, 3:41 pm
  24. this is probably the best lucid dreaming app i’ve seen on the market. glad you took the time to make it. i agree with the other people who say the screen flashing is a good idea. it would be nice to have the flashing be customizable, too (color/color cycling, duration, etc.).

another suggestion, if you don’t mind: it would be really helpful if you were to include default values for each of the variables. for example, you could set the default “length between series” to 10 minutes for the flash dreamer. if the user could adjust the parameters himself, with a “reset to defaults” button in case they mess something up, that would be perfect.

and thanks for actually taking the time to listen to peoples’ feedback and for taking it seriously. i gave your app a great rating on the marketplace :p

  25. Thanks a lot :-) :-) :-)
The flashing screen is on my todo list, not sure if it’s possible yet but I’ll try.
Good idea for the default values, I’ll add it on my todo list too ;-)

    By dreamcatcher | February 1, 2011, 5:04 pm
  26. Well, I tried the flashing screen, unfortunately the light is not bright enough to be seen through closed eyes, unless the phone is very close and right in front of your eyes, which is not practical and probably dangerous for health.

  27. I was trying it out ’cause the Epic just got the Froyo update, but the flash dreamer is not working… D:

    By Dawn | March 26, 2011, 3:22 am
  28. Yes, flash dreamer is apparently not working on Samsung phones. Il is a Manufacturer issue, they did not implement all the android functionnalities necessary to make it work. Not much I can do, except add a warning on the market.

  29. This isn’t working on my friends lg optimus s. She has 2.2.2 froyo. It says it’s not compatable.

On my phone it works amazingly though, thanks

  30. I forgot to mention that my phone is running 3.0 gingerbread.

    By Dakotahnok | August 9, 2011, 10:47 pm
  31. Is it the all app which is not compatible or just part of the app like the flashdreamer ?
    Thanks

    By dreamcatcher | August 10, 2011, 9:43 am
  32. The whole app won’t download.

    By Dakotahnok | August 10, 2011, 6:50 pm
  33. Ok, thanks a lot for the info. :)

    By dreamcatcher | August 12, 2011, 10:23 pm
  34. i cant find the app. i believe i have froyo 2.2 but it doesnt show it on the market. is the any way i can hack my phone so i can get it. just in case my devise isnt froyo 2.2. thanks

    By brandon | February 1, 2012, 11:10 am
  35. You can download the apk here: http://www.attrape-songes.com/software/DreamcatcherFree.apk and install it directly on your smartphone (follow the procedure here: http://www.brighthub.com/mobile/google-android/articles/37151.aspx).
However if you can’t see it through the market, there is probably something not compatible with your smartphone.
