Lucid dreaming

Music: Binaural beats

Binaural beats facilitate access to higher level of consciousness, such as concentration or meditation with minimum efforts. It can also be used to induce lucid dreams. It is a powerful personal development tool.

Brain waves

To understand the effect of binaural music, one must first make a stop to understand brain activity. Our brain activity can be measured by electroencephalography. Using these measures, the scientists have discovered that the brain functions with different rhythms or waves.

  • When we are alert (concentration, thinking, anxiety, action), the brain emits beta wave (frequency greater than 12 Hz)
  • When we take a moment to relax, close our eyes or meditate, the brain emits alpha wave (frequency between 8 and 12 Hz). At this frequency, the two cerebral hemispheres activity is synchronized, allowing creative, intuitive thinking and access to higher level of consciousness.
  • When the rhythm slows down, the brain emits theta wave (between 4.5 and 8 Hz), we are either asleep or performing a very advanced type of meditation.
  • And if the frequency slows down a little bit more, we are in a nearby state of unconsciousness; it is the delta wave (frequency less than 4 Hz). It happens only during certain sleep stages.

With the help of meditation, relaxation or concentration, anyone can change his brain wave, switching from an active state (Beta) to a relaxed state (Alpha). But it requires effort and training.

Binaural beats

This is where binaural beats can be very useful. The binaural beat is a very special sound effect. Each ear receive a sound with a different frequency, for exemple 315 Hz in one ear and 325 Hz in the other. The brain mixes the two sounds, provoking the perception of a third sound, which is not part of the music (in our example 10 Hz, the alpha rhythm). When the brain receives a frequency close to one of its brain wave, it synchronized itself.

The only material necessary, with the music itself, is stereo headphones. Depending on the frequencies used, the effect will be relaxation or meditation, hypnosis and even lucid dreams.

For meditation just sit cross-legged on a cushion, put the headphones and listen.

For relaxation, hypnosis or creativity just lay down with the headphones and relax, and if you go to sleep, it’s just fine.

For lucid dreams, for maximum efficiency, binaural music should be listen during the WBTB. Wake Back To Bed is a poweful method to induce lucid dreams. But a lucid dream may have very different levels of  lucidity. To boost lucid dream control, activities carried out just before the afternoon nap or during the WBTB play a vital role. Meditation, and therefore producing alpha wave, clarify the mind and produce clear lucid dreams. Yes… but… meditate at 6 am during a WBTB is not an easy task… Instead using an ipod and listening to mp3 binaural music is much easier.

Some free software exists to create your own binaural music, such as Gnaural. But it requires patience and expertise.

If you are willing to pay, the Unexplained store contains a large variety of binaural music of excellent quality at reasonable prices, including a special section for lucid dreams binaural music. It also offers free music samples if you want to start with a test. Music is downloadable directly, so, no need to wait for the post office to deliver it.

The Monroe Institute is a little bit more expansive and has a large variety of binaural music, including binaural music for lucid dreams.
